It might be hard to believe, but something the U.S. government started in the 1870s is still active today. What the government started back then was establish hatcheries to produce fish fry and shellfish seed. It’s intriguing to think about producing millions of small fish or shellfish in a hatchery, and then releasing them into the natural environment to grow and eventually be harvested as part of a fishery.
